日本勢に期待がかかる注目のフィギュアスケートの男子ショートプログラム（ＳＰ）は１３日午後７時（日本時間１４日午前０時）に始まり、最終滑走の町田樹（関大）が午後１１時半ごろ（同４時半ごろ）に終える予定。１２日に公式練習が行われ、金メダルを目指す羽生結弦（ＡＮＡ）は練習リンクでフリーの曲をかけ、トーループと課題のサルコーの４回転ジャンプを２種類成功させる好調な仕上がりを披露した。
高橋大輔（関大大学院）は４回転の回転が足りず、両足で降りる場面があった。町田はフリーの曲に乗って跳んだ４回転でバランスを崩したが、その後の調整では修正して着氷した。
世界選手権３連覇のパトリック・チャン（カナダ）は団体でも乱れたトリプルアクセル（３回転半ジャンプ）の着氷で片手をつくなど、不安を残す内容だった。団体で金メダルのエフゲニー・プルシェンコ（ロシア）は４回転の出来にばらつきがあったが、笑顔を見せて余裕を感じさせた。（共同）

ソチオリンピック、フィギュアスケートの男子シングルを翌日に控えて、日本代表の３人が練習し、羽生結弦選手が２種類の４回転ジャンプを決めるなど、順調な仕上がりを見せました。
１２日の練習は、翌日の滑走順に合わせてグループに分かれ、練習用のリンクで行われました。
このうち羽生選手は、日本の３人のうち一番最初の３０人中１９番目で滑り、世界選手権で３連覇中のカナダのパトリック・チャン選手と同じ組で練習しました。
羽生選手は、得意の４回転ジャンプと、昨シーズンから取り組んでいる難しい種類の４回転をしっかりと決めたほか、フリーの曲をかけた練習でも、２種類のジャンプを完璧に決めて、仕上がりのよさをうかがわせました。
一方、最後から２番目に滑る高橋大輔選手と、いちばん最後に滑る町田樹選手は、同じ組で練習しました。
このうち高橋選手は、４回転ジャンプを繰り返し跳んでいましたが、ソチに入ってから１回もきれいに決まらず、本番へ不安を残しました。
このほか町田選手は、４回転３回転の連続ジャンプや３回転半ジャンプなどを確実に成功させたほか、３人のうちでただ１人、１日２回の練習を行うということで、元気な姿を見せていました。

ソチ冬季五輪フィギュアスケート公式練習（１２日、ソチ）フィギュアスケート男子のショートプログラム（ＳＰ）は日本時間１３日深夜に行われる。日本の羽生結弦（１９）＝ＡＮＡ＝は第４組で１９番滑走。６日（日本時間７日）の団体男子ＳＰで１位となり金の期待がかかる新エースは、１２日の公式練習でも２種類の４回転ジャンプを成功させ好調ぶりを示した。１１日のペアＳＰで日本の高橋成美（２２）、木原龍一（２１）組（木下ク）は４８・４５点で１８位に終わり、上位１６組による１２日（日本時間１３日）のフリーに進めなかった。

オランダ勢に表彰台を独占された１０日のスピードスケート男子５００メートルをテレビで観戦。「僕もメダルを期待されていると思うので頑張りたい」と日の丸を背負う自覚は十分だ。団体で場慣れできたことは「プラスですね」、中６日あいたことも「僕にとってはいいオフ」、ＳＰ滑走順が日本時間１４日午前２時４５分からの第４組１番手に決まり、「さすが僕。最初を引くなんて。そうやって楽しめている」とすべてがプラス志向。金メダルへ完全にベクトルが向いている。

淡々とやるべきことをやる。初めての夢舞台でも、羽生のスタンスは変わらない。「今できる練習はできた」。この日の公式練習ではサルコーとトーループの４回転ジャンプを完璧に決め、ジャンプでミスがあった同組の世界王者のチャンを圧倒。第４組１番目、全体１９番目に滑走する１３日のＳＰに向けて絶好調だ。「精神状態も上がってきている」と自信を見せた。
フィギュアスケートの歴史に、その名を刻む時が来た。羽生は１４日のフリー当日で、１９歳６９日。過去、五輪の男子最年少金メダル記録は、４８年サンモリッツ大会を制したディック・バトン（米国）の１８歳２０２日。羽生はこの記録には及ばないものの、史上２人目の１０代金メダリストになる可能性は十分だ。１１日のスノーボード男子ハーフパイプで１５歳の平野が銀、１８歳の平岡が銅。１９歳の羽生だって、負けてはいられない。
６日の団体ＳＰでは、好演技を披露。チャンだけでなく、憧れのプルシェンコを上回り、９７・９８点のハイスコアでトップだった。８、９日は練習時間前半はマスクをつけてトレーニングし、心肺機能に負荷をかけた。拠点のカナダ・クリケットクラブでも行っている練習方法で、ソチでも自身のルーティンは崩さなかった。
団体の後はやや調子が下がったが、これも計算のうち。「ピークの考え方として下げるべきだと思った。今は上がってきて楽しくなってきた」。過度の重圧も気負いもなく、決戦の銀盤に立つ。「メダルを期待されているので、期待に応えられるようにしたい」。まずはＳＰでロケットスタートを切って、歴史的金メダルへの道を切り開く。

ソチ五輪のフィギュアスケートは１３日（日本時間１４日未明）、男子ショートプログラム（ＳＰ）が行われる。「史上最強」の布陣と呼ばれる日本からは、昨年１２月のグランプリ（ＧＰ）ファイナルを制し、全日本選手権２連覇中の羽生結弦（はにゅう・ゆづる）（１９）＝ＡＮＡ▽今季ＧＰシリーズ２戦２勝の町田樹（たつき）（２３）＝関大▽２０１０年バンクーバー五輪銅メダルの高橋大輔（２７）＝関大大学院＝が出場。国際大会でも十分な実績を残す日本勢の前に、世界の強豪２人が立ちはだかる構図といえそうだ。
０６年トリノ五輪から３大会連続出場になる高橋が、ソチ入りした際に語った言葉が興味深い。「３度目は（代表選考の結果）３番手という形で出る。正直、厳しいと思うが、出るからにはトップを目指す」。謙虚な高橋の人柄がにじんだ一言だが、現状を言い当てている側面もある。
トリノ五輪には高橋がたった一人で出場し、次のバンクーバー五輪は織田信成、小塚崇彦と出てエースとして表彰台に立った。しかし、日本男子のレベルが高くなる中、高橋は昨年末の全日本選手権で５位に沈んだ。最終的には実績が評価され、ソチ五輪の代表に選ばれたが、自らを羽生、町田に次ぐ「３番手」と評するのは、それだけ日本の層が厚いことを示している。ある強化スタッフは「日本男子は五輪でメダルを取ることより、全日本選手権で日本代表になることの方が難しい」と語る。
ライバルは、パトリック・チャン（２３）＝カナダ＝と、「皇帝」の異名を取るエフゲニー・プルシェンコ（３１）＝ロシア。チャンは世界選手権３連覇中の実力者。地元ロシアの大声援を受けるプルシェンコは、ロシアチームの一員として出場した団体で、腰のケガから復帰間もない現状がうそのように鮮やかな４回転ジャンプと躍動感あふれる演技を繰り広げ、健在ぶりを見せつけた。
他にも有力選手がいるとはいえ、メダル争いはこの「５強」の戦いになるとみられる。羽生は「試合に向けて１分、１秒を大切にしていきたい」、町田は「個人戦では弱い自分を封じ込め、メダルを狙う」、高橋は「１００％と言わず、１２０％の演技をする」とそれぞれ抱負を語る。選手同士の高い意識がレベル向上をもたらした絶頂期の日本男子。その成果が問われる男子ＳＰは、日本時間の１４日午前０時に始まる。【芳賀竜也】

Consensus in Sochi: Hanyu is the man to beat

Nearly everyone who is watching men's practices in Sochi is buzzing about Yuzuru Hanyu, the 19-year-old Japanese champion who is reeling off quad toes and Salchows like there's no tomorrow.
Elvis Stojko, the first man to make quads a regular part of his programs, is as impressed as anyone.
"He's on fire," the three-time Canadian world champion said. "His jumps have incredible snap."
Evan Lysacek has watched nearly all of the men's practices, and Hanyu is his pick for gold.
"For sure, he has a good shot," said the 2010 Olympic champion, who is scouting competitors as part of his duties as a TODAY show analyst. "He's got the edge after his brilliant short."
Last week, "Yuzu" announced his presence loud and clear, easily winning the men's team short program segment with a score of 97.98, defeating three-time Canadian world champion Patrick Chan by more than eight points. Hanyu also beat Chan at December's Grand Prix Final.
"We're narrowing the gap (with Chan) every season," said Brian Orser, who coaches Hanyu, as well as two-time European champion Javier Fernández, in Toronto. "We're getting closer and closer, with both grades of execution and program components. There used to be a point-and-a-half difference in each component; now, we're a lot closer to Patrick."
After his afternoon practice Tuesday, Hanyu faced the Japanese press corps that crowds into every one of his training sessions. He was as relaxed and confident with them as he had been on the ice.
"I am not even thinking about the color of the medal," he said. "I am just concentrating, very hard, at each practice and really doing everything I can do."
He was clearly surprised by any suggestions that the Olympic rings might make him nervous.
"Nervous? I don't feel nervous," he said in English, and then added through a translator, "I am just practicing very seriously here in Sochi. I'm not feeling bad about anything."
No Japanese man has ever won Olympic figure skating gold; Daisuke Takahashi took the bronze in 2010. Orser thinks that over the last six months his student has gained the maturity to withstand Japanese media and fan expectations.
"At Japanese nationals (in Saitama in December), there was unbelievable media," Orser said. "There is heavy fan support for Daisuke, because they've known him for so long. He and Mao [Asada] are why the sport is so big. I think Yuzu is gaining more fans now.
"I told him back then, 'If you can handle this intense pressure, the Olympics will be a breeze.'"
Hanyu won both the short program and free skate in Saitama by more than 10 points. Takahashi, who has been battling knee trouble, was fifth.
Questions about whether Hanyu might be doing too much in his practices get a firm "no" from Orser.
"I'd rather they be talking about him than not," he said. "Yuzu needs to be doing this. He has a comfort level in his consistency."
Impartial observer Tom Zakrajsek, the Colorado Springs-based coach who has trained U.S. champions including Max Aaron, Rachael Flatt, Ryan Bradley and Jeremy Abbott, agrees with Orser.
"Yuzuru has looked so poised in all of the practices," said Zakrajsek, who is in Sochi as part of Italian Paul Bonifacio Parkinson's coaching team. "It seems like being fourth at worlds (last season) has caused him to reach, in the correct way."
Zakrajsek, who has a master's degree in exercise science, started talking nerve fibers and transmission of electrical current, and how repetition helps build faster lift and rotation.
"He's keeping his myelin path strongly stimulated," Zakrajsek said. "His quads are snapping lightning fast. The key, of course, is doing it under pressure."
Zakrajsek is also an advocate of periodization -- varying training intensity over time -- and thinks the Japanese teenager may be peaking just right.
"People who taper [off] too soon, and too much, generally don't deliver key performances," he said. "Yuzuru is young, and he's topping up for confidence. Someone like Plushenko, who is much older (31), can top down and still deliver in competition."
Hanyu admitted he is hitting his jumps more easily than even in December. He's not sure why.
"I am just working hard," he said. "Even now, when I am already here in Sochi, I am working hard. I think I can improve more. I want to peak during the free skate."
The men's short program takes place Thursday, so Hanyu's job lies ahead. He isn't in touch with any friends on social media, his custom during competitions. He enjoyed participating in the team event, in which Japan placed fifth overall, and was a bit starstruck to compete against Plushenko.
"I have admired him for a very long time," he said. "He is my idol. I am so glad to compete with him on the same ice. I want to act and perform just like Plushenko."
Orser hears this and makes a bit of a face.
"Really? I don't know about that," he said. "I was quite surprised with Plushenko in the team event. He did stuff I didn't expect. I mean, he was alive when I competed. I've skated in shows with him.
"But I think what Yuzu meant was he wants to be like him, in that Plushenko is a superstar."

Brian Orser is in a bit of a predicament at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, and this particular problem has nothing to do with anything on the ice.
The question, which he believes he has now resolved, is this: How the heck is he supposed to dress for the men's competition? At practice Wednesday, he was wearing a T-shirt from the Spanish team, but his jackets, sneakers and gloves were all from the Japanese team. That's because he coaches Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan and Javier Fernández of Spain, and because of them, he has been quite the quick-change artist in Sochi.
For the men's event, fortunately, he will wear a neutral T-shirt and just change his blazer for when each skater hits the ice.
But Orser will not even have as much as a sock on from one nation in particular: his home country of Canada.
Orser finds himself in an odd situation here: Both of his skaters are considered medal contenders, and both pose a threat to Patrick Chan winning Canada's first Olympic gold medal in the men's event.
And just to add to the soap opera element of the event, Orser is one of the former Canadian men's skaters who contributed to the so-called "Canadian curse."
Orser came close to winning gold twice, earning silver medals in 1984 and 1988. Elvis Stojko also took the silver twice, in 1994 and 1998. Four-time world champion Kurt Browning was a gold-medal contender but never made it to the top. In his only previous Olympic appearance, in Vancouver, Chan placed fifth.
"Japan's never won either," Orser said with a smile following a practice that featured Fernández, Hanyu and Chan. "Spain has never won."
The eight Olympic medals Canadian men have won -- dating back to Donald Jackson, who earned bronze in 1960 -- are the most by any country without a gold. The best finish by a Japanese man was third, by Daisuke Takahashi in 2010.
Hanyu is coming off a triumph at the Grand Prix Final, where he beat Chan by more than 13 points. Fernández enters as Spain's first European champion. (He successfully defended his 2013 title last month in Budapest.) Chan, meanwhile, is the three-time world champion.
In the men's short program, all three skaters will take the ice in the same group, with Hanyu going first, followed by Fernández and then Chan.
Of course, there are several other men who are in contention for the medals, including gold. Keep in mind that Evgeni Plushenko, even though he is 31, is in the field, as is world silver medalist Denis Ten, Daisuke Takahashi and former world champion Brian Joubert.
"It's a couple of the others that everyone else needs to watch out for," said Orser, noting that no one expected Elizabeth Manley to sneak into the medal picture in Calgary, where all the attention was focused on Katarina Witt and Debi Thomas headed into the 1988 Winter Games.
Although most of the media attention in Sochi has been centered on Hanyu, as Japan's figure skating appetite seemingly can never be sated, Chan, with his three conseutive world titles, still carries much of the pressure and expectations.
Stojko, who is at the Olympics working as a contributor for Yahoo! Sports, said that Chan has a lot working in his favor.
"He's the poster boy for the judging system," Stojko said. "It's just a matter of him not making a mistake. The worst thing that can happen is if he makes a mistake and the whole 'Chanflation' thing comes into play. That can't happen here. If he wins the gold medal, he's got to earn it."
Stojko believes Chan and Hanyu are "matched in my opinion" but added, "Hanyu's been on fire this season. He has a youthful flair that could come into play in this competition."
Browning is also in Sochi and will be paying close attention to see if Chan will end the "curse."
"Orser, Stojko, myself, yeah, it's all of our fault," Browning said. "But I don't think Patrick cares about [the curse]. I think he's looking forward to breaking it.
"It is not a nice thing to do to a friend, but I know I wouldn't have done it if I didn't think he could handle it."
Joubert joie
Plushenko is the oldest skater in the men's event at 31, but Joubert, at the youthful age of 29, is another veteran to watch.
"I competed in my first international competition 13 years ago, and I'm not tired of competition," said the Frenchman, whose best finish in his three previous Olympics was sixth in Torino. "These Olympic Games feel like my first one. I arrived and got my equipment, and everything felt new, and I was very excited."
Joubert, the 2007 world champion, was in the same practice session as many of the top medal contenders, including Chan, Hanyu and Fernández.
"Of course they are very strong, very good skaters, but technically I can do the same things they can do," said Joubert, who finished eighth at the European championships last month. "I am very happy to be in the same group."

Lysacek named Japanese champion Yuzuru Hanyu as a favorite for gold.
"We've seen all season he is technically strong. He's a great jumper, and he skates with abandon," he said. "But [the] Olympics is different. Sometimes you never know how a skater will react to the pressure of the Olympic spotlight, especially a teenager."
"Hanyu looks so relaxed; that is what's most impressive," Lysacek continued. "He was maybe faster, maybe stronger than even in the regular season."

Sochi, Russia – Yuzuru Hanyu has impressed skating analysts with his performance in the short program in the team event and his official practices since arriving in Sochi.
How much?
Enough that several, including 2010 gold medalist Evan Lysacek of the United States, believe the Sendai native is the favorite for the gold medal in men’s singles starting Thursday night.
“For sure, he has a good shot,” said the 2010 Olympic champion, told icenetwork.com. “He’s got the edge after his brilliant short.”
Following Tuesday’s session, the 19-year-old spoke to the media and said that he is taking it one day at a time and not looking ahead.
“I am not even thinking about the color of the medal,” he said. “I am just concentrating, very hard, at each practice and really doing everything I can do.”
When a reporter asked him if he was nervous, Hanyu said he was not.
“Nervous? I don’t feel nervous,” he said. “I am just practicing very seriously here in Sochi. I’m not feeling bad about anything.”
What is clear to just about every observer is that Hanyu is ascending. The Grand Prix Final champion looked outstanding in Tuesday’s practice, landing several quadruple jumps and not falling once. He appeared smooth as silk as he went through his paces.
Hanyu practiced again Wednesday without incident.
Questions abound about three-time defending world champion Patrick Chan, who was beaten by Hanyu at the GP Final in Fukuoka in December, and had issues in the short program in the team event.
The 23-year-old Chan does not appear to have the stamina that his younger rival Hanyu has at this point, nor the precision.
While Evgeni Plushenko is also in the mix, there are doubts about whether the 31-year-old can hold up through two programs in two nights. He complained about back pain after Sunday’s free skate in the team event, and that was following two days without competition.
In the end, the result will likely come down to Hanyu’s ability to cope with the pressure.
As coach Nikolai Morozov has said, “Skating is 98 percent mental on this level.”
Based on how Hanyu is trending – winning the GP Final and the Japan nationals in the past two months – it is clear that his path to Olympic glory is in sight.
All he has to do now is go out and take it.

Double Olympic gold medallist Yevgeny Plushenko, three-time world champion Patrick Chan, and teenage rising star Yuzuru Hanyu all have Winter Games history in their sights when they compete to top the podium in the men’s individual figure skating at the Iceberg Skating Centre.
Plushenko, 31, is looking to become the most medalled man in Olympic figure skating history while Canada's Chan, 23, and Hanyu, 19, could become the first men from their countries to win the men's title.
Chan came into the Games as favourite but has lost ground after struggling to third in the men's short programme in the team event in which Hanyu gave an outstanding display to lead Plushenko.
"It was good to get the jitters out," said Chan, who holds world record scores in both the free skate and overall total, but was overtaken by Hanyu in the short programme this season.
Vancouver 2010 silver medallist Plushenko is determined to go one better on home ice, and will begin the individual competition boosted by a gold-medal winning performance for Russia in the team event.
Plushenko eyes medal record
That team gold saw him match Gillis Grafstroem's record four medals, having already won gold in 2006 and silver in 2002 and 2010.
Another medal would see Plushenko overtake the Swede, who won his four Olympic medals between 1920 and 1932, as the most medalled man in figure skating history.
And he admits that the prospect of another medal is driving him to continue raising the bar in a programme that is set to be packed with spectacular features.
“I love being first,” he says. “This is my fourth Olympic Games, and I am so happy I can compete, whatever medal I get.
“I'm going to try two quads. I have a triple axel-triple flip combination in my pocket, which is a great combination and one which no one else in the world has done,” he adds.
World champion Chan wants Olympic gold
Chan, meanwhile, has dominated the sport since finishing fifth in Vancouver and has won the last three world titles.
However, Hanyu beat Chan in the Grand Prix final and should also have a major say in the destination of the medals, as may his compatriots Daisuke Takahashi who took bronze in Vancouver and Tatsuki Machida, not to mention Spaniard Javier Fernandez, a bronze medallist at the Worlds.
"I envied Plushenko for a long time and admired him, so to be able to compete against and defeat Plushenko on the same night is unbelievable,” said Hanyu.
Meanwhile, former Olympic champion Scott Hamilton, who beat Orser to gold at the 1984 Winter Games in Sarajevo, believes that the biggest obstacle facing Chan is himself.
“He has got the total package. The only thing that can deny him is him,” said Hamilton, the last man to follow three world championship titles with an Olympic gold.
Hanyu getting closer
“It comes down to the moment. It comes down to how you feel at that specific time,” adds Hamilton who believes the competition has got tougher since Chan won his first world title in Moscow in 2011.
“In Moscow, he was so far above the group. But now Yuzuru Hanyu is getting closer and closer.”
Takahashi, 28, meanwhile has experience of the Sochi ice having won the 2012 Grand Prix final at the Iceberg Skating Palace.
“It's great, I can really feel the ice. I have had a lot of different experiences in the last year, but I still remember that moment when I won here," said the Japanese skater.
Spaniard Fernandez, who trains with Hanyu under the guidance of Orser in Toronto, also believes he has a shot at the podium. And he feels that his jumping skills could give him the edge in Sochi.
“I'm good at jumping. I'm able to do many quads in competition and many big jumps. It's my strongest thing,” says the Spaniard.
The competition gets underway with the short programme on 13 February, with the free skating final taking place on the following day.
